A Commissioner for Missing Persons will appear in Ukraine under special circumstances

The previous commission of missing persons in special circumstances was unable to begin work.

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has approved amendments to the Law of Ukraine “On the legal status of persons missing “, according to the Government portal.

Given the increase in the number of missing persons caused by large-scale invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine , instead of the Commission on Missing Persons in Special Circumstances, a new institution is formed – the Commissioner for Missing Persons in Special Circumstances.

Such an innovation was needed because the legal status of the commission was not legally identified, and it was unable to begin its activities.

“Attempts to somehow launch the institute of missing persons has been going on since at least 2018. And with the signing of the adopted law by the President of Ukraine, there will be real opportunities to protect the rights of missing persons and their relatives and friends, “said Deputy Justice Minister Valeria Kolomiets.

An effective mechanism for granting legal status to persons who have gone missing in special circumstances has been established, and the issue of their registration, search, and social protection of their family members has been resolved.

In addition, the new law regulates the Unified Register disappeared under special circumstances.
