“I shot this film in order to capture the mundaneness of war, the surreality of the images that appear on the verge of the apocalypse,” says director Volodymyr Tykhi.
The first full-length film from the “Babylon'13” union about a new round of war called “Day of the Ukrainian Volunteer” was presented at Sheffield Doc/Fest in Britain. The work of director Volodymyr Tykhi, which received a “Special Award” in the main competition program, is reported on the Docudays UA website.
The film tells the story of a video engineer, a restorer, a historian, a singer, a polar explorer and a pensioner, and is actually the first full-length film interpretation of what happens from February 24, 2022. The picture was shot in different locations during one day, March 14, on the 2944th day of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
“I shot this film to record the mundaneness of war, the surreality of images that appear on the verge of the apocalypse. My goal was to enrich the palette of images of my contemporaries and to focus the viewer's attention on the minor nuances of the humanitarian catastrophe. It is nice that the professional jury appreciated my work, because I also see this film as one of the tools of cultural diplomacy. And it worked,” comments the director Tyhiy.
