Testimony about two weeks of rape in Bucha and a photo report from Mariupol were awarded the Baueux prize

“It's not so much about journalism as about the victims… Journalism will always be less important than the people who suffer.”

Every year, since 1994, the award Baueux honors journalists who practice their profession in dangerous conditions to ensure access to free information. This year's prize was awarded to Ukrainian photographers Evgeny Maloletka and Mstislav Chernov for their reports from Mariupol. This is not the first international recognition for them. The prize was also awarded to a journalist from France who collected the testimonies of women who were raped during the occupation of Buchi, reports Le Monde.

Photographer Yevhen Maloletka from the Associated Press (AP) was awarded for a multimedia report together with Mstislav Chernov (“Video Image” award) , they both covered the fall of Mariupol. Mstislav Chernov paid tribute to the peaceful population:

“It's not so much about journalism as about the victims… Journalism will always be less important than the people who are suffering, we were able to get out of Mariupol, not everyone was so lucky, it was important for us that the original material (photo and video shooting) came out together with us,” he continued.

For his part, Yevhen Maloletka approved the fact that “Ukraine's hope is visible”, “it is very important that journalists in the world talk” about the invasion:

< p>“My hometown Berdyansk is occupied, I returned from the front, and this territory is destroyed, too much blood has been spilled, it's time to end this conflict,” he added, before the audience rose to applaud the artists.

Below are the same photos that cover the attack of the occupiers on the Mariupol maternity hospital. The woman in the picture did not survive, she died with the child after some time.

As for the awards for radio journalists, the international jury awarded the prize to correspondent Maureen Mercier (France Info), who collected the testimony of a mother and her daughter about “two weeks of rape and terror in Buch” , again in Ukraine.

“I dedicate this award, which is so important, to this woman who found incredible courage to testify to these two and a half weeks of constant rape. I spent many days in Buchi until I could collect her testimony. Several women, on the spot, testified to me about the rape, before not finding the strength to talk about it.”

“Radio allowed me to work over time, – says Maureen Mercier. – Return to Buchi every day, for days in a row. War is fighting, bombs, but it is also a terrible, silent violence that affects women and children. I am infinitely grateful to the Bayeux Prize, which shed light on this suffering.”
