Paintings by Malevich and Kandinsky from Russian museums are “stuck” in South Korea

Problems with the delivery of paintings to Russia are related to sanctions imposed against the aggressor country.

Paintings from Russian museums presented at the exhibition ” Kandinsky, Malevich and the Russian avant-garde: the art of revolution “in Seoul, can not deliver to Russia. This is due to the lack of appropriate flights, according to the Russian “Kommersant”.

The exhibition was held from December 31, 2021 to April 17, 2022. It featured paintings “Improvisation №217. The Gray Oval ”by Vasyl Kandinsky,“ Suprematism ”by Kazimir Malevich,“ Jewish Venus ”by Mykhailo Larionov,“ Kosari ”by Natalia Honcharova,“ Objectless Composition ”by Oleksandr Rodchenko.

The paintings belong to the Primorye State Gallery, the Yekaterinburg Museum of Fine Arts, the Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum and the Krasnoyarsk Art Museum named after Surikov. >According to an employee of the Sejon Center, the paintings can be taken out only on special cargo flights. But Korean Air is not currently operating similar flights to Russia due to the country's full-scale aggression against Ukraine.

The center says it is looking for other options. from the collection of the Morozovs, who took part in the Louis Vuitton Foundation exhibition in Paris. These are paintings by Peter Konchalovsky and Valentin Serov.

Konchalovsky's painting is owned by Russian billionaire Petro Aven, who was on the EU sanctions list after the start of a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. The French Ministry of Culture has stated that the painting will remain in the country “as long as its owner is subject to an asset freeze measure.”
