The organization monitors the extent of destruction using satellite images.
The United Nations uses satellite images ” before and after' to monitor the cultural destruction caused by Russia's war in Ukraine.
The UN cultural agency UNESCO said it had confirmed damage to 207 cultural sites in Ukraine following Russia's February 24 invasion.

Among them are 88 religious objects, 15 museums, 76 buildings of historical and/or artistic interest, 18 monuments and 10 libraries.
“We have come to the conclusion that the situation is bad. It could get even worse,” UNESCO Director of Culture and Emergencies Christa Piccat said at a press conference in Geneva, AlJazeera reported.
So far during the war none of the seven world heritage sites were affected.
UNESCO – the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization – joined forces with the UN Satellite Center UNOSAT.
Based on field reports, UNESCO sends a list of potentially damaged sites to UNOSAT. It then requests satellite images from commercial providers, and a small team of experts examines the difference between the before and after photos.
The team matches the images and can indicate the likely time frame in which the damage occurred.
“This is kind of a pilot experiment to see how we can usefully collect this information, and maybe in the long term our goal will be to expand our reach beyond Ukraine and take this tool to a global level so that we can really could have a kind of real-time interactive tool for our experts,” Piccat said.
UNESCO is also working with museums and collections in Ukraine to try to combat the threat of looting, a common problem in war.
UNESCO discussed with Kyiv the possibility of removing cultural heritage objects from the country during the war, but Piccat admitted that this was a “difficult challenge” and the first step was to evacuate the collections to safer regions of Ukraine.
