Eurovision 2023 will be hosted by Liverpool

One month after Eurovision 2022, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) published a statement: “Eurovision 2023” will not be held in Ukraine.

After the victory of the Kalush Orchestra in Turin Ukraine was traditionally supposed to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2023. But due to Russia's invasion of the country, the competition cannot be held in Ukraine. Instead, the BBC will host Eurovision 2023 in Great Britain, in Liverpool, eurovisionworld reports.

Three shows of the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 will be held:

  • semi-final 1 – 9 May;
  • semi-final 2 – 11 May;
  • grand final – 13 May.

The Liverpool Metropolitan Region is largest city in the UK with a population of 2.2 million and in 2019 it was the fifth most visited city in the UK.

Liverpool has a strong connection with the art world, particularly with music, as it is the “home” of The Beatles. The city was the cultural capital of Europe in 2008.

The city has an efficient public transport network and Liverpool John Lennon Airport is linked to numerous international destinations.

The winning country has traditionally hosted the competition the following year, with some exceptions since 1958.

After the Kalush Orchestra's victory in Turin, it was unclear whether the contest would be able to take place in Ukraine in May 2023 due to Russia's invasion of the country.

Just a month after the Eurovision 2022 European language union (EBU) published a statement: “Eurovision-2023” will not be held in Ukraine.

Instead, the EBU started negotiations with Great Britain about holding the contest, and on July 25 it was confirmed: Eurovision 2023 will be held in Ukraine in Great Britain.

On August 12, seven cities that claim to host Eurovision became known, and on September 27, the list was reduced to two potential cities: Glasgow or Liverpool.
