Decorations from Picasso and costumes from Chanel: FilmUA presented a mini-film about Bronislava Nizhynska

The choreographer fundamentally changed the philosophy and aesthetics of modern dance.

A new series of the project “Lost Names” appeared “, dedicated to ballet master Bronislava Nizhynska, whose life was closely intertwined with Ukraine. During her career, she created more than 70 ballet productions, the most famous of which was the performance “The Blue Express” based on the script by Jean Cocteau. Costumes for the dancers of this performance were designed by Coco Chanel, and part of the scenery was designed by Pablo Picasso. Derzhkino writes about a mini-film dedicated to the choreographer.

The choreographer fundamentally changed the philosophy and aesthetics of modern dance and had a significant impact on the history of ballet art of Ukraine.

“Bronislava developed a new direction in modern ballet — constructivism. She staged numbers without music, and boldly complemented classical ballets with acrobatic tricks, involved Kyiv avant-garde artists in her productions,” the message reads.

She spent one of the most fruitful periods of her life in Kyiv. She first opened the ballet “School of Movement”, one of her students was another famous Kyivan, Serge Lifar, whose name also entered the history of dance.
