The British Prime Minister ridiculed the Russians' attempts to win a major tournament.
The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson reacted to the submission of applications by Russia for the European Football Championships in 2028 and 2032.
“The idea that Russia has an idea to hold a football tournament or other cultural event right now is beyond satire. I can't believe that someone will seriously consider their application.
I think that the best option would be the withdrawal of all Russian troops and the transfer of the tournament to Ukraine, “Johnson was quoted as saying by The Guardian.
It is worth noting that applications for the 2028 European Football Championship were submitted by England, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Scotland and Wales (all together), as well as Russia and Turkey. Russia, Turkey and Italy are vying for Euro 2032. The host countries of the tournaments will be announced in September 2023.
