In an updated form, the tournament will begin in 2024.

UEFA approves new format of Champions League , according to the press service of the organization.

In the tournament from 2024, 36 teams will play instead of 32 that are currently playing.

There will be no groups, and the teams will play in one league according to the “Swiss” chess system, which regulates the selection and puts against each other equal opponents. It has not yet been used in team sports.

The top eight teams will advance to the playoffs, while the others will qualify for a new round of the playoffs. All clubs are guaranteed to play 10 matches in one draw.

At the same time, elite clubs will receive additional seats if they fail to qualify for the Champions League. All these changes should lead to an increase in the popularity and revenue of the tournament.

The format of the Europa League (eight matches in the general stage) and the Conference League (six matches in the general stage) is also changing. In total, 36 teams will also play in both tournaments.
