Particles of the meteor shower are generated by comet Swift-Tuttle. Moving in a highly elongated orbit, it completes one revolution around the Sun in 133 years. When it approaches a star, its core partially evaporates, and the gases carry with them grains of sand and pebbles – they form a plume behind the comet.
