The development of AI can lead to increasing tensions between countries – the former head of Google

Eric Schmidt believes that artificial intelligence can be more dangerous than nuclear weapons.

American businessman, former head of Google Eric Schmidt , speaking at the Aspen Security Forum, called for control over artificial intelligence. He also said that the development of such technologies could lead to increased tensions in the world, comparing the situation to the Cold War.

“Until 20 years ago, we were very naive, I was naive, about the impact of what we were doing. But now I understand that information is everything, it has incredible power… Governments and other institutions need to put more pressure on the technology industry to make such developments in line with our values. We can discuss how it can be done, but a discussion is needed,” Schmidt said.

He also added that it is very difficult to negotiate now, in particular, regarding the development of AI.

“Firstly, we need technologies that will allow us to understand what is happening, and we also need awareness of the other side… For example, we decided to negotiate with China about surprises related to AI. How to do it? Who in the US government will work with us? And still worse from the Chinese side: who will we call? Try to name this person, I can't. We are not ready for the negotiations we need,” Schmidt said.

The businessman drew parallels with the 50s and 60s of the last century, when the world had a rule of “no surprises” regarding nuclear tests.

< p>“This is an example of the balance of trust or lack of trust, this is the rule of “no surprises”. I'm very concerned that the U.S. treating China as corrupt or communist or whatever, and the Chinese treating America as a loser … will allow people to say, “Oh my God, they're up to something,” and then create some kind of uncertainty. Will create a situation in which any of your actions or preparations for something will provoke the other side. No one is working on it right now, but the AI is powerful enough to have that kind of power,” Schmidt added.

Scientists have previously said that robots with artificial intelligence tend to make sexist and racist decisions.
