Scientists have expressed concern about the activity of a giant volcano under New Zealand

A series of earthquakes were recorded under the lake of the Taupo volcano.

New Zealand scientists again expressed their fears, linked to the giant Taupo volcano. It was the source of the most destructive eruptions to occur in the last 5,000 years, according to Sky News.

Geological agency GeoNet said it recorded about 700 small earthquakes under the lake Taupo It fills the caldera of the volcano and is the largest lake in New Zealand.

The agency said in a statement that it raises the level of volcanic danger to one from zero. The volcanic alert system is based on six increasing levels of excitement, but GeoNet notes that eruptions can occur at any level and may not change consistently because activity can increase rapidly.

The agency also emphasized that for the first time the level of volcanic danger was raised to one. At the same time, they acknowledged that this is not the first time that the volcano has caused concern.

“Earthquakes and deformations may be observed in the coming weeks or months,” GeoNet said in a statement.

The Taupo volcano last erupted about 1,800 years ago, when it ejected more than 100 cubic kilometers of material into the atmosphere. The eruption devastated much of the central part of New Zealand's North Island in the pre-human period. According to GeoNet, it was the largest eruption on Earth in the last 5,000 years.
