Microsoft spoke about the attacks of Russian hackers on Ukrainian institutions and the media

The hacker group is linked to the Russian GRU.

Microsoft has stated that it has recorded and repulsed a series of cyberattacks on Ukraine by hackers linked to the Russian government. According to the company's website, the attack was carried out by the Strontium group affiliated with Russia's Central Intelligence Agency.

Microsoft also said it had received a court ruling that allowed it to take control of seven domains used by Strontium to conduct these attacks. As a result, the company was able to mitigate the level of attacks that the group carries out against Ukraine.

It is noted that the domains were used to attack Ukrainian institutions, including the media. In addition, they targeted government agencies and think tanks in the United States and Europe. Microsoft experts believe that hackers sought to establish long-term access to their targets, provide tactical support for physical intrusion and obtain confidential information. The company informed the government of Ukraine about the detected activity and measures taken.

Microsoft also added that the recent cybersecurity tools are part of the company's strategy to combat Strontium since 2016. It has already set up a process that allows it to quickly access the infrastructure used for attacks.

“Strontium attacks are only a small part of the activity we are seeing in Ukraine. Prior to the Russian invasion, our teams began working around the clock to help organizations in Ukraine, including government agencies, defend themselves against the threats of cyberwarfare, which has intensified since the invasion began and is still ongoing. Since then, we have seen almost all hackers linked to Russia take part in a full-scale attack on the Ukrainian government and critical infrastructure, “Microsoft said in a statement.

attackers are trying to gain access to Ukrainian Telegram accounts. They spread messages with malicious links to the alleged messenger's website in order to gain unauthorized access to accounts with the possibility of intercepting code from SMS.
