Cats were able to remember the nicknames of their “friends”

In addition, animals remember the names of their owners.

Japanese scientists conducted an experiment that allowed to learn more about the intelligence of cats. According to researchers, they can remember the names of their owners, as well as the nicknames of “friends” without training. An article with the findings of scientists was published in the journal Nature.

During the experiment, scientists sought to find out whether cats can remember what they look like and the names of family members in which they live, as well as other familiar cats. The experiment was conducted with animals that live in houses, as well as in a cat cafe.

Cats showed faces human or the snout of another animal on the monitor and called the name or nickname. Sometimes scientists called the right names, sometimes not. It turned out that the cats spent more time looking at the monitor when they heard the wrong name, as if trying to make sure that the image did not match what was said. Cats from cat cafes paid little attention to the image on the monitor and the nickname that sounded.

In addition, cats that lived in large human families looked at the monitor longer when the wrong name was uttered. Animals that have lived longer in their families also need more time.

Scientists believe that their experiment showed that cats are able to remember names and nicknames without special training.

Earlier, scientists said that in the 10,000 years since cats have been domesticated, their brains have shrunk significantly. According to researchers, this will improve the perception of how animals adapt to prolonged stay with humans.
