Egyptian authorities have told about the discovery of hundreds of ancient mummies and golden statuettes in the ancient necropolis of Saqqara. One of the statuettes depicted the famous innovator in the field of archeology Imhotep, according to Science Alert.
Saqqara is a large necropolis of the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis. There are more than a dozen pyramids, animal burials and ancient Coptic Christian monasteries.

Of the 150 statuettes discovered so far, one depicted Imhotep, who carried out a “revolution in the architecture of the ancient world.” He lived in the third millennium BC and built the stepped pyramid of Djoser, one of the first in ancient Egypt. He later became the god of medicine.
According to the Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Egyptian Archeology Mostafa Waziri, the goal of the mission, which has conducted four seasons of excavations, is to find the tomb of Imhotep.
Other statuettes depicted numerous gods and goddesses, including Bastet, Anubis, Osiris, Amunmin, Isis, Nefertum, and Hathor. Waziri also said that 250 wooden sarcophagi with mummies dating back to about the 5th century BC were found during the study.
An unopened papyrus was found inside one of the sarcophagi. It was transferred to the laboratory of the Egyptian Museum in central Cairo for restoration and study. According to Waziri, the length of the papyrus is estimated at nine meters. It is thought to contain chapters of the Book of the Dead, a collection of funerary texts made up of spells used by Egyptians to carry the dead through the underworld.
