WTA and ATP unexpectedly condemn removal of Russian and Belarusian tennis players from Wimbledon

Statements were made in the organizations.

Association of Professional Tennis Players (ATP) and Women's The Tennis Association (WTA) has condemned the decision of the British Laun Tennis Association (LTA) to ban Russians and Belarusians from participating in Wimbledon 2022 and other tournaments under its auspices.

“We We are very disappointed with today's statement by AELTC and LTA. The basic principle of the WTA is that individual athletes can compete on their own merits and without any discrimination. “They should not be punished or denied the opportunity to participate in tournaments because of their origin or because of decisions made by their governments. Discrimination against athletes is neither fair nor justified,” the statement said.

It will be recalled that on Wednesday, April 20, the All-England Club of Lawn Tennis and Croquet (AELTC) and the Laun Tennis Association (LTA) announced that Russia Belarusian and Belarusian tennis players are banned from playing at Wimbledon and other tournaments in the UK due to the war in Ukraine.

This is the first major tennis tournament that prevents athletes from aggressor countries due to the Russian-Ukrainian war.
