Why the US and its allies do not give Ukraine the same amount of weapons that Russia has: an expert's explanation

Taras Chmut talked about the logic of the asymmetric approach and why the number is not decisive.

Quality is better than quantity, precisely therefore, the US and its allies do not give Ukraine the same amount of weapons that the Russian army has. Western partners of Ukraine chose an asymmetric approach. What it consists of and how it will help Ukraine, military expert and head of the “Return Alive” foundation Taras Chmut explained in his Telegram.

Taras Chmut began with the fact that many people ask questions like “why don't the USA and its partners try to respond to the mass of Russian equipment with the same mass of their own equipment for Ukraine?” or “where are the hundreds of Western tanks and BBMs, artillery, aviation and everything else?”. It seems, he wrote, that theUS and its partners have chosen an asymmetric approach. It consists in the fact that Ukraine is given, perhaps, less weapons, but of better quality, which allows to level the quantitative superiority of the Russians.

“Moscow has more barrel and rocket artillery and anti-aircraft guns for it, so keep the M142/M270 and GMLRS or Excalibur to deal with anti-aircraft depots or point-to-point enemy platforms,” he wrote. – In order to open up more opportunities in the air, keep AGM-88 HARM anti-radar missiles for anti-aircraft suppression and the ability to use reconnaissance and strike drones.

The same logic applies to the fight against enemy armored vehicles – in addition to ATGMs and grenade launchers, the Allies provide means of remote mining of the terrain in order to hinder the enemy's maneuvering of armored vehicles.

Similarly at sea – the Armed Forces do not provide a fleet like the Russian Federation, but anti-ship missiles, so that the enemy is afraid to enter the northwestern part of the Black Sea.

If we now massively give Western classical heavy weapons, then there is every chance that our logistics will not be able to satisfy needs and then the logistics system will start with repairs“, wrote Taras Chmut, noting that in the medium term we still need to receive classic heavier weapons from the USA and its partners. This applies in particular to ATACMS missiles, which he believes we need and which are not so difficult to integrate.
