Ukrainian scientists modeled the spread of radiation in the event of an accident at the ZNPP

Not only the territory of Ukraine will be under attack.

of Ukraine conducted simulations that showed the transfer of radiation impurities in the event of an accident at Zaporizka nuclear power plant. The simulations were conducted under the weather conditions observed on August 15-18.

It is noted that radioactive emissions were specified as two point sources at heights of 200 and 500 meters above the earth's surface with a total stationary power of 1 Bq/s (0.5 Bq/s for each of the sources).

“The characteristics of their size distribution were used for radioactive aerosols: the average diameter is 1 μm, the standard deviation is 2 μm,” the report says.

The researchers note that due to the impossibility of determining the exact characteristics of the emission source in the event of a hypothetical accident at the ZNPP, the simulation results should be interpreted only qualitatively and relatively.

The simulation showed that under the weather conditions of August 15-18, the highest concentration of radioactive aerosols was observed b within the territory of Ukraine, especially in the zone closest to the ZNPP with a radius of 50-100 kilometers, in all directions from the station. Significant concentrations of radionuclides can reach Kyiv.

“Partially radioactive impurities can also be removed to the territory of neighboring states (the eastern part of Belarus, Poland, the Baltic states). At the end of the simulated period, the main direction of radionuclide transport is eastward, as a result of which significant concentrations of radioactive aerosols can be observed over the occupied parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions,” the message reads.

As previously reported, the situation in Energodar, temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation, is dangerous due to constant shelling by Russian troops of the territory of the Zaporizhzhya NPP. The Ukrainian authorities are developing an evacuation plan from the city and the zone at risk of radiation contamination in the event of an accident at the ZNPP, taking into account the military situation.
