One of the best Ukrainian chess players Pavel Elyanov refused to play at the European Championship.

The tournament in Slovenia will start on March 27 and will be held without Elyanov's participation, he said on his Facebook page.

The grandmaster noted that he would miss the competition due to Russia's military invasion of Ukraine.

Elyanov also expressed his position on the decision of the International Chess Federation to allow Russians and Belarusians to play in the European Championship in neutral status:

“I respect those Russian chess players who signed an open letter against the war, but I consider it impossible to play against any Russian or Belarusian player (under any flag) until the end of the war (ie before our victory).”
