Ukraine's victory over Russia will be a signal for China not to touch Taiwan – an American diplomat

Currently, the People's Republic of China is evaluating the effectiveness of Putin's forceful methods and is watching the reaction of the West.

The course of events in Ukraine's war against Russia may significantly affect the future situation involving China and Taiwan. If Ukraine defeats the Russian Federation on the battlefield, it could be a signal to the PRC that a military invasion of Taiwan will not bring the desired result. This was stated by the former special representative of the United States Department of State for Ukraine Kurt Volker in a conversation with TSN journalists.

According to the diplomat, China is now closely watching the development of events in Ukraine and is waiting for the results of the war. It is important for Xi Jinping to understand whether Putin's forceful method of seizing the territory of a neighboring state will work.

“China is watching whether Russia will succeed in the war against Ukraine. Because the success of Russia will mean that open aggression, seizure of territory, change of power – it works. And the West does not oppose this. China will get the green light to do whatever they want with Taiwan, because the West does not stop them and does not prevent them from changing regimes and seizing territories,” Volker believes.

Diplomat notes , that China will not openly support Russia in a war of aggression, because the local authorities perceive Ukraine as an independent state. As for Taiwan, China considers it to be its territory, so the approach to hostilities there will be significantly different.

“It is important that China does not want to destroy Taiwan, as Russia is doing with Ukraine. They want a rich Taiwan, not a region that will be a problem for them. It is not beneficial for China to compare the situation with Taiwan to Ukraine, it gives us an opportunity to dialogue with China,” Volker added.
