Ukraine has received official status in the European energy network ENTSO-E

Ukraine has been pursuing this goal for many years, filled with hard work, from politicians to energy sector professionals.

Ukrainian transmission system operator – Ukrenergo, has received the official status of an observer member in the continental association of European operators of the system power system ENTSO-E. This was announced by the head of NEC “Ukrenergo” Volodymyr Kudrytskyi following the signing of the agreement.

“Today, after Ukraine's unique accession to the European energy system in the midst of war, rocket fire and cyberattacks, it is an opportunity not only to join all ENTSO-E workflows and systems, but also to see and thank all European colleagues and partners for their help. training and professionalism of power engineers were a necessary condition for Ukraine's accession to the European grid. But the support of each European operator is invaluable, so I took the opportunity to thank each of them, “he said.

Observer status will allow Ukrenergo to join the International Association of European Transmission System Operators.

The signing ceremony took place in Warsaw .

According to Kudrytsky, European Commissioner Kadri Simson arrived at the ceremony.

“She is here to remind everyone – the illegal and brutal war against Ukraine affects all spheres of politics in Europe, especially energy. All of Europe is beginning to understand that for Russia energy is a weapon that it tries to blackmail, pressure, corrupt. But energy this is also protection. The Ukrainian power grid is ready to become an element of protection from Russia, “said the head of Ukrenergo.

He stressed that the potential for electricity exports benefits both Europeans and Ukraine. It can bring billions to Ukraine's budget by taking the money from Russia. Honestly, efficiently and transparently. That is why the Ukrainian energy system is part of the continental security policy and the security policy promoted by the Ukrainian government. politicians in life, “Kudrytsky said.

He also stressed that the stable work of Ukraine in the European network, which our specialists have been providing for more than a month, opens up unique opportunities.

The Ukrainian generation can replace part of the corrupt and dangerous gas imports from Russia to Europe. The Ukrainian energy mix (energy produced in Ukraine from various sources, from nuclear generation to alternative energy, ed.) Is 70% carbon-neutral. that our energy will help replace energy from fossil sources, which heats the planet. And will help in the transition to renewable sources, whose plan is equally ambitious for Ukraine and the EU, “said the head of the Ukrainian company – the transmission system operator.

At midnight on February 24, 2022, NEC Ukrenergo disconnected the Ukrainian power system from the networks of Russia and Belarus. On the same day, the Russian army attacked Ukraine. However, despite active hostilities, Ukrenergo successfully tested the power system in isolation for three days.

After the tests, Ukraine decided not to return to the power system in Russia and Belarus, which was to take place on February 27.

Instead, NEC Ukrenergo applied for accelerated synchronization with the European energy system.

Synchronization of Ukrainian and European power grids is a strategic goal at the national level aimed at creating a competitive and transparent market electricity in accordance with the requirements of European legislation and market practices.

Currently, the synchronization of the Ukrainian energy system with the European one has reduced Russia's influence on Central and Western Europe in the energy sector and increased energy security throughout the region.

After the end of the war, Ukraine and Europe will face new opportunities for joint development of electricity markets. and support for the “green transition”.
