Ukraine can “bypass” the MAP on its way to NATO – US Chargé d'Affaires

But this should not be called an abbreviated procedure.

Ukraine can follow NATO's example when joining NATO Finland and Sweden to bypass the stage of obtaining an Alliance Membership Action Plan , according to US Chargé d'Affaires Christina Quinn. During an interview with the EP, she stated that this procedure is not mandatory. “As far as the possibility of Finland joining without a MAP is concerned, the Membership Action Plan has never been a legal requirement for NATO membership, so Ukraine can also join the Alliance without a MAP . However, I would not call it a shortened procedure, “the Chargé d'Affaires said.

She explained that the MAP is a program that will help a candidate country move closer to NATO requirements. for example, a country meets all the requirements of the Alliance – it does not need an Action Plan.

“Therefore, Ukraine and any other country should not receive a Membership Action Plan and implement it if you generally meet most of the requirements,” said Christina Quinn.

It will be recalled that in March, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that he had completely cooled down to NATO . The reason at the time was, among other things, the Alliance's unwillingness to close the skies over Ukraine – such a move could protect our cities from the chaotic bombings of racists. The president also said that he did not see any prospects for our joining the bloc, since we are being ignored in NATO.
