Ukraine breaks off diplomatic relations with Syria

A trade embargo and sanctions will be imposed on Syria.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine announced the severance of diplomatic relations with the Syrian Arab Republic through recognition of the so-called “independence” of Russia's puppet formations in the temporarily occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts.

Syria's decision to recognize the “independence” of the DNR terrorist groups and LNR interprets Ukraine as an unfriendly act, an encroachment on its sovereignty and territorial integrity, a gross violation of Ukrainian law, the UN Charter and fundamental norms and principles of international law.

“In response to this unfriendly act, Ukraine declares the severance of diplomatic relations with Syria without the severance of consular relations, in accordance with Article 2 of the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations. The Ukrainian side is also launching a procedure to impose a trade embargo on Syria, as well as impose other sanctions on Syrian legal entities and individuals, “the ministry said in a statement.

“Our position is clear – we react as harshly as possible to any attempts to undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and protect national interests in all available ways, including on the diplomatic front,” said Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba.

It should be noted that in connection with the crimes of the regime of Bashar Assad against the Syrian people, the Ukrainian side closed the Ukrainian embassy in Damascus in 2016, and in 2018 ordered to close the Syrian embassy in Kiev. The Ukrainian embassy in Lebanon protects the interests of Ukrainians in Syria.

It will be recalled that on June 29, Syria stated on the adoption of a decision on “recognition of independence” created by Russia on the territory of Ukraine “Donetsk People's Republic” and “Luhansk People's Republic”.

In response, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky responded with a statement on the termination of relations with Syria./strong>
