“This is not a righteous war, but a lie”: Norwegian writer Erland Lou wrote a letter to the Russians

The writer is surprised that the Russian people allowed war to happen.

Norwegian writer Erland Lou, known for his work on books “Naive. Super “,” Dollar: a novel “,” In the power of women “and others, wrote a letter to his Russian readers. In it, he condemned the war in Ukraine, and also spoke about why the Russian authorities decided to start it. The full text of the letter was published by Medusa.

“I am hurt by the fact that Russian boys, as I write this, are dying in tanks, on the streets and in the fields during a war they barely understand. This is not a righteous war, but a lie. The whole world is watching these events, and you Russians are also guessing that something is wrong. But you are not allowed to see or find out what is happening, “the letter reads.

Lou also wrote that the restriction of access to the free press in Russia is a bad sign. “Your government has created an environment in which it is dangerous to seek the truth. For this you face a fine, imprisonment, and in the worst case – death; all this is very similar to the situation that prevailed in the country that attacked you eighty years ago, “he wrote.

The writer also added that Russians are used to being lied to, and their parents have faced this. In such circumstances, it is easy to give up and decide that those in power should be involved in politics. But right now it is especially important that the voice of the Russians be heard.

“From the outside, it seems that your government is afraid that the example of the country that your soldiers are now attacking would make you think about democracy in Russia. She is so afraid of it that she calls the people of that country Nazis. This word is in the minds of every Russian, which is why it works so effectively. Even though this is not true. After all, Ukraine, on the other hand, is a democratic country. For thirty years, it has built democratic institutions and ensured the separation of powers so that the helm of power does not fall into the hands of one man. In other words, it has managed to build a modern state – with freedom of thought, press and religion, a state where diversity is recognized, “Lou wrote.

He notes that the coalition of right-wing forces in Ukraine won the 2019 elections only 2.15% of the vote, and that there are neo-Nazis in both Russia and Norway, but the mere fact of their presence does not make the country Nazi.

“Your leaders fear that it is not Nazism that will spread to you, but democracy. But democracy does not pose a danger to the people of Russia. You can decide for yourself just like everyone else. But democracy threatens your rulers. For them, it means the loss of power and the loss of money that should have been spent on the development of Russian society, and settled in the pockets of several people.

You know all this very well. And that's why I'm surprised that the Russian people allow all this to happen. I understand that you are scared. I'm even scared, even though I'm far from the scene. But your sons, brothers, fathers and husbands are dying in Ukraine in unimaginable numbers right now – together with Ukrainian brothers and sisters. For what? For one man's crazy delusions about a lost empire. Europe has not seen such an offensive since Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 1941.

Only the Russians themselves can deal with this. Please do this. So that all of us who love Russia and Russians could continue to do so, “the letter reads. that Russia lost a significant number of troops during the invasion of Ukraine, calling it a great tragedy for the country. But the Russians still have no idea of the scale of this tragedy, as Moscow does not name the number of its losses.
