“In Zaporizhzhia, which shuddered from the shrill wail of air-raid sirens, a closed screening of the new play “Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors” based on the cult Ukrainian novel by Mykhailo Kotsyubynskyi took place. Actually, the new play was handed over to the management of the theater, to the actors of the theater and to some invited representatives of the media . To make an official premiere for a wide audience today is unrealistic. It's not the right time, that is, wartime. Therefore, the play is ready, and with it the main characters – Ivan, Marichka and Palagna – will wait for victorious peaceful days in Ukraine, so that with an open heart to go out to the audience and tell the story of the great tragic love of the Hutsul Romeo and Juliet,” wrote “Teatr. Malo. Bukv” in his Telegram channel. Ukrainian theater critic Oleg Vergelis.

The play, based on the story of Mykhailo Kotsiubinsky, was staged by the young Ukrainian director Roman Kozak, laureate of the All-Ukrainian Theater Award GRA (for the production of “Peer Gyunt” in Sumy). From now on, Kozak, an ex-Lvivian, works at the Volodymyr Magar Ukrainian Theater in Zaporizhzhia.

Director Kozak says ZN.UA, which this year marks 110 years since the first publication of the iconic “Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors” in Lviv. And this factor in the theater is considered quite important in connection with their new performance. According to the young director, M. Kotsyubynskyi's story experienced a second birth in the middle of the 20th century after the release in 1965 of the brilliant film “Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors” by film director Serhii Paradzhanov, to whom the young Ukrainian theater director symbolically dedicates his new production.

“When I was working on the stage text of the play, I involuntarily wanted to resort to quoting individual Paradzhanov visions. And if the audience feels something “Paradzhanov” in our play, then such a vision probably arose purely impulsively during rehearsals: not consciously, but subconsciously, – says the director. – For me, the main character of Kotsyubynskyi – Ivan Paliychuk – is like a child of nature who does not fit into the world of old “forgotten” roots, turning himself into a “shadow” as a result. Our two Ivans in different creative compositions – actors Shadrin and Kumundzhiev are quite different in terms of their acting nature. The first actor is quite experienced both on the stage and in life, that's why he steps on the role of Ivan quite accurately, measuredly – this is the Ivan who subconsciously understands the doom of both his own fate and the fate of his family. The second our Ivan is perceived as more naive and takes his various steps from ignorance of life, bringing the score of his movement to an antagonistic non-perception of the surrounding reality, which ultimately destroys himself.”

The director emphasizes that it will be possible to talk about the official premiere of “Shadows” for the general public only after the victory of Ukraine, because now the city of Zaporizhia and the Zaporizhia region are under the constant crosshairs of the Russian aggressor.

The Zaporizhia Theater named after Volodymyr Magar also clarifies that during the full-scale invasion of the Russian invaders, the Ukrainian theater actively supported the Ukrainian military, the city's residents, and numerous immigrants. The artistic director of the Zaporizhia Theater Iryna Redko initiated the active work of the creative staff on patriotic concerts in military units, hospitals, and hospitals, and also organized a number of cultural events for children who moved to Zaporizhia from the occupied territories. The Zaporizhia Theater also has a volunteer workshop where they sew balaclavas, special suits, weave nets, make harnesses, collect funds for helmets, provisions, etc. Regarding the repertory plans for the new theater season, the theater says that, first of all, Ukraine needs a victory over the Russian aggressor, and there are repertory ideas, there are many of them, but it will be possible to publicize such ideas only when the military tension subsides – both in Zaporizhzhia and in Ukraine.
