The United Nations may initiate the signing of agreements on a humanitarian truce between Ukraine and Russia, Interfax-Ukraine reports citing the UN press service.

According to the report, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres instructed his Deputy for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths to immediately discuss with the parties involved in the war in Ukraine the possibility of concluding humanitarian ceasefire agreements and their practical implementation.

Speaking to reporters Monday, Guterres said the war in Ukraine had led to “the senseless loss of thousands of lives, the forced relocation of ten million people, mostly women and children, the systematic destruction of important infrastructure and the rapid rise in global food and energy prices.”

“It is necessary to put an end to this,” the secretary general said.

Guterres believes that the armistice will ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid and the security of movement of civilians. “It will save lives, prevent suffering and protect civilians,” he added.

According to him, the humanitarian truce will also allow progress in serious political negotiations aimed at reaching a peace agreement based on the principles of the UN Charter.

Guterres stressed: “The solution to this humanitarian tragedy is not in the humanitarian, but in the political sphere.”

He also hoped that the ceasefire would help address the threat of hunger in many developing countries.

Earlier, British Foreign Secretary Liz Trass said that Ukraine should not be sold in peace talks with Russia.
