South Korea has launched an orbital probe to explore the moon

In the future, the country intends to send a landing module.

South Korea launched its first orbiter for research months The launch took place using a Falcon 9 launch vehicle from the Cape Canaveral spaceport, Reuters reports.

The probe was named “Danuri”, which means “enjoy the moon”. It weighs 678 kilograms. The device separated from the carrier approximately 40 minutes after launch and has already established contact with the Earth.

It is expected that the probe will arrive in lunar orbit in December. After that, a year-long lunar satellite research mission will begin, during which time, in particular, he will have to find a place to land a rover and test the operation of the space Internet.

If the mission is successful, South Korea will become the seventh country in the world to participates in lunar research, and the fourth – in Asia. Previously, lunar missions were launched by Japan, China and India.

By 2030, South Korea also intends to launch a lander on the moon.
