Sanctions in force: about 9 million Russians are already on forced leave or with reduced working hours

The Russian government has expressed readiness to support only 600,000 Russians, with almost 9 million people in need.

Санкции в действии: уже около 9 млн россиян находятся в вынужденных отпусках либо с сокращенным графиком работы

95,865 Russian workers in Russia are on forced “leave” due to leaving the aggressor country of Western companies. This was stated at a meeting of the Federation Council on March 23 by Vice Speaker of the Upper House of the Russian Parliament Galina Karelova. reports “Medusa”.

Most of the potentially unemployed were in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Samara and Kaluga regions.

However, obviously, this figure, which appeared a little more than 2 weeks after the start of sanctions, is just the tip of the iceberg.

Thus, in this short period of time, a total of 36,765 organizations, employing 8.4 million Russians, have announced changes in the employment regime, Karelova added.

She reminded that a number of foreign companies have stopped or are ceasing their work in the country, and said that measures should be taken.

It is noted that the Russian government has already allocated almost 40 billion rubles to prevent unemployment in the context of the departure of Western businesses. However, these support measures should cover only more than 600,000 Russians.

After Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Western countries imposed harsh anti-Russian sanctions, and Western companies began to leave the Russian market or restrict work with it. According to Yale University researchers, more than 450 companies have restricted their activities in Russia since the beginning of the war.

The government has proposed the introduction of external asset management of companies leaving the Russian market. At the same time, the head of “Norilsk Nickel” Vladimir Potanin warned the authorities against the nationalization of this property.
