Russia has successfully stimulated pro-Russian sentiment in China – The Guardian

Chinese media increase pressure on Russian disinformation about Ukraine.

Россия успешно стимулировала пророссийские настроения в Китае — The Guardian

Close ties between the Russian and Chinese state media, together with tight state control of information in China, have allowed Russia to effectively stimulate pro-Russian sentiment in China , “nationalizing” Ukraine in the eyes of Chinese citizens. This was reported by The Guardian with reference to the Taiwanese cyber monitoring group Doublethink Labs.

The group's report says Chinese media are stepping up Russian disinformation about Ukraine and linking “Ukrainian Nazism” to protests in Hong Kong to encourage solidarity between Russians and Chinese against “interfering in foreign affairs.”

The Doublethink Labs report points to content-sharing agreements between the two countries' state media, Chinese censorship decisions, influential social media accounts and government directives covering the war, all of which helped the public support Russia's attack, despite the Chinese government's nominally neutral stance.

Prior to the invasion, Russia's need to denazify Ukraine was almost not discussed until hostilities began, the report said. But the speed with which disinformation spread showed “how easily cooperation between Sino-Russian state media can sow disinformation, citing each other as sources and broadening each other's perspectives.”

When Russia invaded Ukraine and the Chinese media spread false stories, including claims by Russia that the Ukrainian army had surrendered and President Vladimir Zelensky had fled. The publications also promoted false polls stating that Ukrainians did not support NATO membership.

Chinese censorship has also blocked Ukrainian-related content, including messages from a Chinese citizen who wrote blogs from Odessa. At the same time, the country's state media published fake information about US-funded biological weapons laboratories in Ukraine.
