“Taking care of the safety and well-being of all players, officials, the media and fans, the IIHF Board has decided to revoke the rights to host the 2023 Ice Hockey World Championship in Russia in accordance with IIHF Regulation № 9.

The decision to postpone the event was made primarily for the safety and well-being of all players, officials, the media and fans. The Council expressed serious concerns about the safety of players and officials in Russia, the country and within the country, “the statement said.

The tournament was to take place in St. Petersburg from 5 to 21 May 2023. The new host of the World Cup will be approved during the annual IIHF Congress in 2022 in Tampere, Finland.
