Russia does not have a successor to Putin who would be safe for Ukraine – the British ambassador

In the case of the Russian Federation, the long-term perspective must always be taken into account.

The British Ambassador to Ukraine Melinda Simmons noted, that Russians should determine their own future. However, today the federation does not see Vladimir Putin's successor, who would be safe specifically for Ukraine, she said during an interview with “RBK Ukraine”.

“And I also think that it is difficult to see in the Russian landscape a person who could replace Putin, who would immediately make Ukrainians feel safer,” Simmons said.

Furthermore, the ambassador said that it will take time for the principle of democracy to finally work in Russia, or for the regime to be changed.

“Regardless of what the citizens of Russia decide, whether they want something different or not, it will take time. Therefore, I believe that all of us, Ukrainians and neighboring countries, European countries and others, must admit that we are looking at the long-term perspective. And that we should all change our policy accordingly,” the ambassador said, noting that it is about the growth of NATO's presence in the region.
