Promoted pro-Kremlin narratives: Meta blocked a network of Russian bots

The company Meta announced that it blocked two separate networks of fake accounts that were operated from China and Russia, reports CNN.

It is noted that the Chinese network was small, but it included accounts that positioned themselves as Americans, raising issues, sensitive for American society. Meta said it was the first time it recorded an attempt to influence Americans in this way by China.

The Russian network was wider. She promoted pro-Kremlin narratives about the war unleashed by the Russian Federation in Ukraine. It included thousands of accounts in various social networks, and its owners spent $100,000 on advertising on Facebook and Instagram.

Meta does not associate campaigns with specific companies, nor with the governments of China or Russia. At the same time, the company said that the accounts that were part of the network were managed from these countries.

The company noted that the network of Russian accounts that was blocked is “the largest and most complex Russian operation that we have disrupted since the beginning of the war in Ukraine. She ran a sprawling network of more than 60 websites pretending to be news organizations, as well as accounts on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Telegram, Twitter and other sites.”

More than 2,000 Facebook accounts and pages were part of the effort to promote pro-Kremlin narratives about the war in Ukraine. The operation involved websites imitating real Western news agencies, including The Guardian. According to a list of website addresses included in the Meta report, the Russian campaign also registered fake sites impersonating The Daily Mail and German publications Bild and Der Spiegel.

The campaign's main efforts were aimed at spreading disinformation , related to the war crimes committed by the Russians in Buch. Thus, a website posing as The Guardian published an article in which Ukraine was accused of staging mass murders committed during the Russian occupation of cities and villages in the Kyiv region.
