Presidential debate in France: Macron expressed support for Ukraine and promised to put pressure on Russia

And also accused his main competitor Le Pen of dependence on Russia.

In a televised debate between French presidential candidates , incumbent Elysee Palace master Emmanuel Macron said he would continue to help Ukraine if re-elected.

“We need to continue to support Ukraine so that it can resist so that Kyiv does not fall. We need to help it financially,” he said ahead of the second round of the presidential election.

Macron stressed that Russia needs to increase pressure. In particular, so that the conflict does not spread to other countries. According to him, he is ready to work to ensure that Russia first agrees to a ceasefire in Ukraine, and then withdraw troops from Ukrainian territory.

At the same time, Macron devoted much of his speech to attacking his main rival, Marine Le Pen. He accused her of depending on Russia, because a few years ago she took a loan from a Russian bank to finance her party's activities.

< span style = "font-weight: 400;"> According to Le Pen, this loan is not “dependent” on Russia, because when it returns the money, it will have no other obligations.

However, she stressed that she took a loan from Russia because the current French government has not created favorable conditions to take large loans in the homeland.

The second round of the presidential election will take place in France on April 24. Macron, who has often been accused of loyalty to Russian President Vladimir Putin, and the pro-Russian candidate Le Pen, who has already promised to withdraw France from NATO if he wins, have the best chance of winning.
