Potato market collapse: farmers harvest starch and reduce potato plantations

Ukrainian farmers had no choice but to give last year's harvest for starch.

The lion's share of last year's potato harvest did not hit the shelves , as millions of consumers were forced to leave Ukraine. In addition, some warehouses were under occupation. Farmers are currently donating tons of potatoes for starch, according to the “Breakfast with 1 + 1” story.

It is noted that this year the plants will produce a record amount of starch for all the years of independence. It is about 50 thousand tons, instead of 10 thousand tons per year. At the same time, farmers managed to get at least some of the money.

However, Ukraine may need a maximum of 12 thousand tons of starch per year, so the only way out is to export.

According to a fruit and vegetable expert from the World Development Bank Oksana Ruzhenkova, are currently considering appeals to the embassies of a number of countries with a shortage of potato starch (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan).

, so there will be no shortage of potatoes.

Currently, processing companies are restructuring their business to other products: considering the use of starch to make paper, mashed potatoes and beans.
