Poland is preparing proposals for the introduction of a tax on Russian energy in the EU

This will speed up the process of reducing dependence on Russia.

At the next summit of EU countries in Brussels, Poland will present a proposal to introduce a tax on Russian raw materials, including energy. This was stated by the Minister of Climate and Environment of Poland Anna Moskva, writes Polish Radio.

The tax, in her opinion, should persuade EU countries to accelerate the process of reducing dependence on Russian energy.

“I I will present this proposal in detail. This will be a special tax, the amount of which will depend on the degree of dependence on Russian raw materials. Obviously, the tax will apply to different types of raw materials. This step should motivate countries to revive the rate of reduction of dependence on Russia, “she explained.

It is noted that the tax will cover all Russian raw materials: coal, gas, oil and other derived raw materials. She added that the new tax will be based on the model of the carbon emissions trading system, which serves to decarbonise the European economy. Politicians will discuss the sixth package of EU sanctions, which should include an embargo on Russian oil.

The GIPL gas pipeline, which is the interconnector of the two countries, has started operating between Poland and Lithuania, effectively enabling further gas supplies between Eastern Europe and the other Baltic states. Serhiy Makogon, General Director of the GTS Operator of Ukraine, clarified that the expansion of fuel supply opportunities will also apply to Ukraine.
