Melnyk urged Scholz to create a “European tank alliance”

The former ambassador of Ukraine to Germany said that this would solve many problems of the Armed Forces on the battlefield.

The Ukrainian army needs tanks to continue a successful counteroffensive, but the Western allies are still delaying their provision. One of the main suppliers could be Germany, which produces Leopard tanks, but the German chancellor Olaf Scholz has repeatedly refused Kyiv this request. Former Ambassador of Ukraine to Germany Andriy Melnykin an interview with Welt am Sonntag suggested the politician to create a “European tank alliance” together with other partners.

According to the diplomat, such an association would take the burden off Germany itself as the main supplier of tanks and would provide the urgent needs of the Armed Forces on the battlefield right now.

“We now need everything that can be delivered quickly: Leopard 2 tanks and Marder BMPs, more artillery, as well as ammunition. This is the main priority. We ask Chancellor Olaf Scholz to create a European tank alliance. A dozen countries have two thousand Leopard 2 tanks. If each of them gives approximately 10% of this to Ukraine, then we will be able to create an entire army of 200 or more tanks to quickly liberate the occupied territories,” explained Melnyk.
