Marshall Plan: Scholz and von der Leyen urged partners to think about rebuilding Ukraine now

Politicians propose to discuss the reconstruction of Ukraine at the highest level and to create a special donor platform for it.

Recently, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz proposed to the Allies to create a post-war recovery plan for Ukraine, which would include joint funding from EU countries, the United States and other allies. His initiative was supported by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, who believes that we should start thinking about the reconstruction of Ukraine now. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung writes about this with reference to the joint statement of the politicians.

In the appeal, Scholz and von der Leyen stress that none of Ukraine's international partners, no matter how economically powerful they are, will be able to restore the infrastructure destroyed by the Russians on their own.

“In addition to the current emergency, we must now think about rebuilding the country, even if peace still seems far away. Reconstruction of destroyed housing, schools, roads, bridges, infrastructure and energy supply – all this must be done now so that the country can get back on its feet as soon as possible. Ukraine needs the prospect that it will be able to grow economically again as soon as the war is over. We have to solve this together – the EU, the G7 and our partners far beyond. International financial institutions and leading international organizations should join this,” the statement said.

Scholz and von der Leyen propose to create a joint inclusive donor platform for the Ukrainian “Marshall Plan”, which will allow monitoring the use of the funds involved.
