Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak have promised to tighten controls on migration to the UK if they win the PM election

Both candidates have similar views on the country's migration policy.

Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak have promised to strengthen control over illegal migration to Great Britain, if they win the election for the post of Prime Minister. In particular, both candidates support the plan to relocate illegal immigrants to Rwanda. The BBC writes about it.

The publication reports that Sunak is going to more carefully determine who is eligible for asylum and plans to introduce limits on the number of refugees inside the United Kingdom. He will also, like his rival Liz Truss, continue the plan to deport illegal immigrants from Great Britain to Rwanda and increase the number of border guards.

Both contenders for the post of British prime minister said they would study similar agreements with other countries. Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said the Rwanda deal was the right approach and that she was determined to “see it through to full implementation”. She also noted that if she becomes the leader of the Tory party and the prime minister, she will increase the number of border forces from 9,000 to 10,800 people.

As for Sunak, he promised to do “whatever it takes” to make the Rwanda scheme work and described the UK's migration policy as “broken” and “chaotic”. He wants to give parliament the ability to regulate the number of refugees coming to Great Britain by setting an annual limit on their admission.

The BBC reminds that this year more than 14,000 migrants crossed the English Channel and sailed from France to Great Britain in small boats. In an effort to curb border crossings, the government announced in April that it would send some illegal asylum seekers to Rwanda for permanent residence. However, the agreement with the East African country never took effect due to a number of legal problems. Britain could lose £120 million it paid to Rwanda if the courts rule the migrant resettlement plan is illegal at an upcoming hearing, it has been reported.
