In solidarity with Ukraine and in opposition to the Russian aggressor, Lithuanian deputies submitted a legislative initiative to parliament.

Amendments to the Law on Memorable Dates of Lithuania were registered by a group of 16 deputies belonging to both the ruling party and the opposition. Lithuanian parliamentarians propose to celebrate the Day of Genocide Victims in Ukraine on May 9, Delfi reports.

The main initiator of the relevant legislative initiative was the Deputy Speaker of the Seimas Paulus Saudargas, and among the co-authors of the amendment are the names of the Speaker of the Seimas Victoria Chmilite-Nielsen, Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Justice.

Lithuanian officials propose to introduce the Day of Remembrance of Genocide Victims in Ukraine on May 9, along with Europe Day.

“May 9 is celebrated in the Russian Federation as Victory Day in World War II, but at the same time silences war crimes and repression of the Soviet Union against entire nations during the bloody Stalinist era. Lithuania, Ukraine and parts of Europe did not have to rejoice replaced by another, who also committed crimes against humanity, “- said in an explanatory note to the bill.
