Gazprom threatens Naftogaz with sanctions

Since May, the monopolist has not fulfilled the terms of the contract and is offended by attempts to force him to pay.

Russian gas monopolist Gazprom threatens Ukrainian “Naftogaz” with sanctions due to the arbitration initiated by the latter and declares that it will stop paying for gas transit through Ukraine. The corresponding statement was distributed by the press service of Gazprom.

The Russian company categorically rejects all claims of Naftogaz in the arbitration and insists that they will not pay for the services of the Ukrainian side.

As you know, the arbitration request was filed by Ukrainian Naftogaz because that the Russians are not fulfilling the terms of the contract signed in 2019, in particular, starting in May they will pay less for pumped gas.

At Gazprom, despite the terms of the contract, which include, in particular, the “pump or pay” scheme, they believe , that it was the Ukrainian side that refused to fulfill its transit obligations.

We will remind that in May, Ukraine disconnected gas transit through the Sokhranivka GIS after the intervention of the occupying forces in the technological processes on this branch of the gas pipeline. Ukraine offered Russia to redirect the transit going to Europe to the “Suja” connection point, which is located on the territory controlled by Ukraine. But Russia refused.

As reported by Gazprom, they consider Naftogaz's submission an “unfriendly step” and threatened to impose sanctions against the Ukrainian company. These sanctions, in particular, will include “a ban on Gazprom to fulfill its obligations regarding concluded agreements, including carrying out financial transactions”.
