Gazprom shuts down another Nord Stream turbine

Prices in Europe reacted to the monopolist's announcement with an 8% increase.

Russian gas monopolist Gazprom stops work one Siemens turbine for the North Stream gas pipeline, the holding's press service reported. Gas pumping through the Nord Stream will almost halve compared to current volumes.

It is about the equipment at the “Portova” compressor station at the starting point of the gas pipeline. The stoppage of the turbine at Gazprom is called “forced”, as it allegedly needs major repairs.

“In connection with the expiration of the period between maintenance and overhaul before major repairs (in accordance with the prescription of Rostechnadzor and taking into account the technical condition of the engine) “Gazprom” stops the operation of another Siemens gas turbine engine at the “Portov” CS, the message says.

The daily productivity of the “Portov” CS will decrease from 67 to 33 million cubic meters from July 27. Against the background of news from Gazprom Gas prices in Europe soared to $1,850 per thousand cubic meters, accelerating growth to 8%, according to data from the ICE exchange.

Under the pretext of “technical works”, Russia is limiting the supply of gas to Europe and is waiting for the onset of cold weather, when the lack of resources and their prices will become particularly noticeable.

On July 11, Russia stopped the gas pipeline “for repairs” and sharply reduced gas supplies. Germany appealed to Canada with a request to hand over to the Russian Federation a Siemens turbine under sanctions, which works at the “Portov” KS, in order to deprive Moscow of arguments. Despite Ukraine's objections, Ottawa agreed to hand over the turbine.

On July 21, Gazprom resumed gas supply through the Nord Stream-1 gas pipeline. In general, in June, Moscow reduced the capacity of the gas pipeline by 60%. As Reuters has learned, the turbine, which the Russian Federation demanded back, is stuck in Germany due to Moscow's refusal to approve its transportation.
