France refused to return to Russia paintings by Serov and Konchalovsky

The pictures are related to Russian billionaires.

French authorities have detained two paintings from the Morozov collection, who participated in the exhibition Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris. According to Medusa, these are paintings by Peter Konchalovsky and Valentin Serov.

According to Le Monde, France will remain “Self-Portrait in Gray” by Konchalovsky (1910) and a portrait of Timothy Frost by Serov (1891). And the newspaper Le Figaro claims that the second case is a portrait of Margarita Morozova, which Serov painted in 1910.

It is alleged that Konchalovsky's picture is owned by Russian billionaire Piotr Aven, who was on the EU sanctions list after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The French Ministry of Culture has stated that the painting will remain in the country “as long as its owner is subject to an asset freeze measure.”

Serov's painting was presented at the Moscow Museum of Avant-garde Art. The president of the museum is billionaire Vyacheslav Kantor, close to the president of the aggressor country, Vladimir Putin. Cantor has been under EU sanctions since April 8.

The French Ministry of Culture said the second canvas belonged to the Dnipro Art Museum, one of the oldest museums in Ukraine. The agency said that the canvas will remain in France “until the situation in the country will not create conditions for a safe return.”

The exhibition of works from the Morozov collection was held in Paris from September 22, 2021 to April 3, 2022. It presented about 200 works by Gauguin, Van Gogh, Matisse and other authors. As most of the collection belongs to Russian state museums, the French authorities will return the paintings to Russia in the coming days.

It will be recalled that Finnish customs detained three trucks with paintings from Russian museums at the border . The goods were detained on April 2 and 3, and the trucks contain paintings from the Tretyakov Gallery, the Hermitage and other museums of the aggressor country.
