Exchange rate: in June, due to the population, the cash market grew four times

In June, the population sold currencies by $207 million more than they bought.

Volumes of currency sales by Ukrainians in June exceeded volumes of purchases for $207.3 million, which is slightly lower than May's figure of $262.2 million and April's $237.8 million, the National Bank reported. Currencies: In June, foreign currency sales decreased to $206.6 million from $244.1 million in May and $252.6 million in April, while purchases were $11.9 million compared to $10.2 million and $8.6 million in May -April respectively.

Althoughon the cash market, the volume of transactions in June jumped four times thanks to the removal of the ceiling on the selling price of foreign currency by the NBU. If in March-April banks sold $72 million and $62.7 million respectively to the population, in May – $216.9 million, then in June – $865 million.

The volume of purchases of foreign currency by the population on the official market increased even more in June – to $852.4 million from $188.6 million – in May, $68.8 million – in April and $71.3 million – in March .

As a result, circulation on the official cash foreign exchange market in June already exceeded 40% of the pre-war level, while in the first months of the war it was less than 5%. -2.5 times, while the volume of purchases fell by almost two orders of magnitude.

At the same time, in general, bank clients began to buy significantly more non-cash currency in June than to sell: “net” purchases amounted to $1.678 billion compared to $1.184 billion in May and $421.2 million in April.

In general, since the beginning of this year, the population sold currency by $497.7 million more than they bought, while bank clients, on the contrary, bought it by $5.7 billion more, than sold.

NBU interventions in June increased to almost $4 billion from $3.4 billion in May, $2.2 billion in April, $1.78 billion in March, $0.31 billion in February and $1, 31 billion in January.

We remind you that in June the international reserves of Ukraine decreased by 9%. As of July 1, 2022, according to preliminary data, they amounted to $22,756.9 million.
