Electricity from the Zaporizhzhya NPP belongs to Ukraine – Guterres

Guterres called on the Russian Federation not to disconnect the nuclear power plant from the energy system of Ukraine.

UN Head Antonio Guterres on Friday called not to disconnect the Russian-occupied Zaporizhia NPP from Ukraine's power system after Ukraine announced Russia's intentions to do so.

“Obviously, electricity from Zaporizhzhia is Ukrainian electricity, and the Ukrainian people especially need it in winter. This principle must be fully implemented,” said the UN Secretary General during a visit to the Odesa port in southern Ukraine, AFP reports.

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant was seized by Russian forces in March, and recent fighting around it has given rise to a nuclear incident comparable to Chernobyl. On Friday, Kyiv accused Moscow of planning to cut off electricity produced in Zaporizhzhia.

“There is information that the Russian occupying forces are planning to shut down the reactors and disconnect them from the output lines of the Ukrainian power system,” – reported the Ukrainian energy operator. Energoatom”.

Energoatom said last week that Russian forces plan to divert electricity from Zaporozhye to Crimea, which was occupied in 2014. The plant — Europe's largest — has been hit several times in recent days, raising fears of a nuclear disaster.

Earlier this week, Guterres addressed those fears in Lviv, western Ukraine, saying that any action against the object will be similar to “suicide”.
