An associate of Donald Trump called Zelensky a “dangerous fool” and praised Putin and Medvedev

Former US Army Lieutenant General Michael Flynn is a longtime supporter of the Russian president.

The position of Donald Trump and his supporters since the beginning of the full-scale war in Ukraine raises a number of questions. The former US president has repeatedly blamed Joe Biden's administration for the Russian invasion, and his associates allow themselves to go even further. For example, former lieutenant general of the United States Army Michael Flynncalled the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky a “dangerous fool” and praised Vladimir Putin and Dmitry Medvedev, who, in his opinion, “bravely defend the interests of their country.” Newsweek writes about it.

In an interview with the conservative Mel Kay Show, Flynn praised the qualities of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Deputy Chairman of the Security Council Dmitry Medvedev, calling them “courageous leaders who put everything on the line to protect their country.” Flynn also mocked Zelensky, calling him a “dangerous fool”.

A clip of the general's speech, posted by political pundit Ron Filipkowski, has gone viral on Twitter. In particular, it was shared by such authoritative journalists as senior reporter of The New York Times Maggie Haberman and author of The Atlantic Tom Nichols. The latter said that while Flynn's public statements should not be refuted given his controversial past, his continued pro-Putin stance is worrisome.

“There is no point in denying any of Flynn's words, but it is always important to let the public know that the three-star American general is a fan of the Russian regime that has threatened to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine,” Nichols said.

Recall that Flynn previously served as a lieutenant general in the US Army before assuming the role of national security adviser in the early days of the Trump administration. He resigned amid controversy over his contacts with the Russian ambassador and is generally known for having strong ties to Russia throughout his career. In March, less than a month after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Flynn said that Ukraine's independence “doesn't matter to the United States”.
