Ada Rogovtseva, Roman Balayan and others called for a boycott of Russian culture

Russian films are in one way or another a weapon of the “Russian world”.

Seven famous figures of Ukrainian cinema called for a boycott of Russia after it started the war in our country . Their stories were published by Variety, and key messages were published by Goskino Ukrainy.

In particular, Russia was condemned by actress Ada Rogovtseva, directors Roman Balayan, Sergei Bukovsky, Mikhail Ilyenko, film critics Vladimir Voitenko and Lubomir Goseiko.

Ada Rogovtseva said that she is a volunteer. “It's scary when you don't do anything. When you sit in the basement at night, it's unpleasant. And when you're busy all day, it's not scary. I am proud that the people on the front line are just like that. The people who are suffering now are like that. They are brave, wonderful people, “she said.

“I was born an optimist. But in recent years, some other qualities have emerged. I started to hate. And I really hate killers. I hate people who raise their hand at a children's hospital, raise a machine gun at a child, a helpless woman, and my hero. On the 18th of this month I had to play at the Kharkiv Theater. So far no place to play. And the boy I was supposed to play with in the play was killed. He is a bright, clean, young man. He was. It's like burying your son. I know what pain is, ”she added.

Rogovtseva noted that she believes that broadcasting Russian films on festival screens is currently unacceptable. “This country is sowing death. And not reasonable, good, eternal, “she added.

“I don't care how Putin leaves this world, either by shooting himself in the head or strangling him with a scarf. Either way, the end is near. But I'm worried – I'm really scared – that my relatives from Moscow sent a funny computer card with congratulations on March 8 to my mother and wife with wishes of peace in our heads. They, like millions of other citizens of the Russian Federation, have been brainwashed – or perhaps I would say their brains have been completely brainwashed. Billions of dollars of Putin have been purposefully spent on this. And this work was occupied by the Russian cultural sphere, including cinema – “the most important of all the arts,” according to Lenin, “- Sergei Bukovsky .

He added that he knows for sure that since 2014, Russia has been making films about its own army, exposing military heroes who came to “liberate” the people of Crimea and Donbass from “Ukrainian nationalists.” And the actor Porechenkov personally came to support the Russian army in the so-called “L / DNR”.

“Russian films, for all their artistic merits, are somehow the imperial weapon of the Russian world and should be withdrawn from showing on all world platforms – cinemas, streaming services, festivals and others. This will be a real disarmament of the bloody, agonizing Russian Empire, ” Vladimir Voitenko said.

“I fully support the complete boycott of Russian cinema, despite the civil position of some directors. Recently, a prominent Russian critic wrote a very good article on the collective responsibility of the Russian intelligentsia, including directors. And collective responsibility entails collective retribution, ” Andrei Khalapachi said .

He added that he respects directors such as Alexander Sokurov and Andrei Zvyagintsev, as well as others whose lone voices opposed Russian propaganda. But this was not enough and today the whole world is watching the tragedy that unfolded in Ukraine.

“At last year's Cannes Film Festival, I did not shake hands with my old friend, the director of the Moscow Film Festival Kirill Razlogov at a dinner of directors. I felt remorse after his death, but today I am convinced that his participation in the Crimean Film Festival and his tacit support for Putin's policies have contributed to what is happening now. And the blood of murdered children in Ukraine is also on his conscience, “Halapachi added.

“It is Russian culture and the Russian language that have always been the leading detachment of gentle intrusion into the soul, into everyday life, into communication through masterpieces of Russian literature, poetry, cinema … Russia has always been able to embrace geniuses. Let's remember the Ukrainian Nikolai Gogol. Geniuses wanted to write, draw, sing – create. Make money. And Russia has always needed aphorisms about itself – ingenious formulas of national uniqueness, mystery, inflexibility, (…) Russian myths about national uniqueness, mystery, invincibility… And then it sounds: “Russia is where the Russian language!”. And the war begins, “- Mikhail Ilyenko.

“It would be at least strange after Russia's inhumane, fascist actions in Ukraine, which began on February 24, 2022, if international film festivals allowed Russian films to participate in their programs this year,” Roman Balayan said.

“Ukrainian directors have called for a boycott of Russian cinema, and this has not gone unnoticed by the French press. However, while the Cannes Film Festival has so far contented itself with a statement renouncing official Russian delegations, not all festivals in France dedicated to Russian cinema agree to boycott screenings of Russian films. (…) Together with Ukrainian directors, I call for a boycott of Russian cinema at all film events in France and Europe, ”said Lubomir Goseiko.
