Renowned German cyclist Tony Martin will put up for auction his silver medal at the 2012 Olympics to help Ukrainians affected by Russia's military invasion.

The 36-year-old ex-athlete lives in Switzerland and works in a private school, where he has already accepted 43 refugees from Ukraine, but plans to do even more. The online auction will last two weeks, the starting price of the 2012 Games medal is 5,000 euros.

“If I can tell my grandchildren what helped people with this medal, it will be much more important than just showing them the award. No one will take away my memories. By selling this medal, I will be able to help refugees even more,” Bild quoted the rider as saying.

It is worth noting that Tony Martin is also a multiple world champion. The German ended his career last year after being injured during a fall at the Tour de France.
